SACRAMENTO, CA — Senator Ricardo Lara (D-Bell Gardens), the API Legislative Caucus and Cambodian community leaders from across California hosted a press conference to commemorate April 17, 2015 as the 40th year of the Khmer Rouge seizure of Cambodia and the beginning of the Cambodian Genocide. As the California State Senator of the largest Cambodian population in the United States, Senator Lara introduced Senate Resolution 21 as Cambodian Genocide Memorial Week during the Senate session on Thursday, April 16, 2015. The introduction of SR 21 marks an important day not only for Cambodian Americans, but for all Americans who stand for human rights. SR 21 will honor those who died as well as survivors and their descendants for their courage and contribution to our state and country. Additionally, it will declare April 13 through 17 Cambodian Genocide Memorial Week.
“It is overdue to properly memorialize the Cambodian Genocide and the Cambodian people in California,” said Senator Lara. “The resiliency and perseverance of Cambodians to overcome and surpass this tragic history are to be recognized and admired.” Source: http://sd33.senate.ca.gov/multimedia/2015-04-27-video-cambodian-genocide-memorial-week-press-conference |
