This morning, 4 June, the Trial Chamber of the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC) heard the impact statement of civil party Mrs. Bay Sophany.  The sixty-seven-year-old Bay, who now lives in San Jose, California, was raising a family in Phnom Penh when the Khmer Rouge came to power in 1975.  Before a gallery full of Cambodian and international observers, she described the evacuation and subsequent splintering of her family.  Although Mrs. Bay’s pain was obvious, it was equally obvious that she desperately wanted her story heard.  The ECCC must deliver justice for her family, she said at the close of her testimony, if she is to die in peace.        Article

A teacher in France at the onset of Year Zero, Neou Sarem understood the Khmer Rouge were dangerous, but she couldn't bear the separation of her family. VOA Khmer presents "A Return From France, 1976," the story of Neou Sarem's journey back and search of her family.

The parties continued the questioning of the witness Mr. Stephen Heder during this week's trial hearings in Case 002/01, and Mr. Heder's testimony was completed on Thursday 18 July 2013.

As Nuon Chea previously had informed the Trial Chamber that he would be willing to answer questions put to him by the parties, this questioning had initially been scheduled to commence following the completion of Mr. Heder's testimony.  However, speaking from the holding cell in the basement of the ECCC courtroom on Wednesday 17 July, Nuon Chea informed the Trial Chamber that he had decided to to decline to answer any question from the parties, and said he had no confidence in the court due to what he said was unfair and unbalanced treatment of him and his defence.
